Grizedale Forest
Located around 3.5 miles south of Hawkshead, Grizedale Forestv is the perfect day out for all ages and abilities. You can spend the day exploring the forest environment, whether on a gentle walk, along a mountain bike trail, or even by swinging through the trees! Whatever your interest, the forest is a great place to play, exercise or relax.
Getting there
If travelling by car, there is a car park at the visitors centre in the heart of the forest.
There is also good off-road access from Hawkshead to the visitors centre, either on foot, by mountain bike, or by horse.
What to do at Grizedale
Walking
Grizedale has several way-marked walking trails of varying difficulties and lengths. Depending on which you choose, you’ll enjoy stunning views, forest sculptures, hidden tarns, and plenty more.
Go Ape!
The award-winning high wire forest adventure course at Go Ape! Features rope bridges, Tarzan swings and zip slides, all high up in the trees. Enjoy a memorable few hours of exhilarating adventure.
Sculptures
Grizedale is home to over 50 pieces of sculpture dotted around the forest. These are made from a range of materials, all unique, and all a joy to discover. There are musical sculptures, animal sculptures, bizarre sculptures and the famous ‘wall for a walk’ by Andy Goldsworthy. A map and booklet are available from the Visitor Centre.
Orienteering
There is a permanent orienteering course in the forest with graded courses for everyone, from the novice to the experienced. A map is available from the Visitor Centre.
Visitor Centre Shop and information point
At the visitor centre, you’ll find a wonderful shop stocked with wood products, local crafts, children’s treats, and a good supply of maps and books. There is extensive information about the forest for all the questions you might have to enjoy your visit. There is also a large children’s playground, and an exhibition space.
Café
After exploring the forest you deserve a treat or two! The on-site Café Ambio has a tasty menu from breakfast to lunch, with light bites, hearty meals and home baked cakes to enjoy.
